Quarter 1 - S.T.E.M.
We are continuing to build our STEM program at AVE! Students will explore aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math during units that focus on:
- Collaboration, creative problem solving, critical thinking, and resilient risk-taking.
- Engineering & design processes
- 3D printing
- Block coding and robotics
K-2nd S.T.E.M
Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade have started the year exploring coding skills. Students build understanding coding algorithms (sequence), debugging (finding and solving mistakes in a program), and decomposition (breaking problems down into smaller pieces). Second graders level up their coding skills by identifying patterns that allow them to effectively code using loops. Ask your students about Indi Bots (Kinder), Bee Bots (1st Grade), and block coding with a computer (2nd grade).
In the next few weeks leading up to Winter Break, students will study online safety and digital citizenship while implementing some cool technology!
3rd-5th S.T.E.M.
As we build our STEM program, our 3-5th graders are also building their coding and programming skills using different tools. As their skills progress, we explore coding that incorporates detailed loops (while relating it to math skills), events, conditionals, and some variables. Students will have further opportunities to practice these skills throughout the year. Ask your 3rd graders about programming micro:bits to become name badges and step counters. Ask 4th and 5th about being the first students in our school to code using the new Kaibots!
Students in 3rd-5th grade will also begin diving into Digital Citizenship skills in the next few weeks. Lessons will include online safety, kindness, trustworthy resources, and how AI actually works.
