New Building Projects
Miller Middle School rebuild has selected Bryan Construction as the construction manager and general contractor (CM/GC) firm for the project. A design advisory group has been created and has begun to meet. School administrators, along with the Jacobs staff, the partnering Architect and CM/GC toured several Denver and Colorado Springs schools to observe and consider design options and alternatives.
Trautner Geotech has been selected as the firm to perform a Geotechnical Study of the Miller Middle School site.
A hazardous materials assessment of Miller Middle School was completed by SME Environmental.
An ALTA Survey of the Miller Middle School property was completed by Goff Engineering.
The Career and Innovation Center project has selected Jaynes Corporation as the construction manager and general contractor firm for the project.
A design advisory group is in place and has been meeting weekly, beginning in mid-November, the group will continue to meet through January.
Renovation Projects
Secure Vestibules
New, more secure vestibules are being designed for schools to increase school security and safety.
Schematic Designs are completed and under review for secure vestibule improvements at Park ES, Fort Lewis Mesa ES, Sunnyside ES, Florida Mesa ES, Escalante MS, and Durango High School.
New vestibules at Animas Valley ES and Needham ES will be completed utilizing Grant funds rather than Bond funds.
Roofing Projects
Construction documents are nearing completion for general roof repairs and maintenance that is scheduled for summer 2022 at Park ES, Fort Lewis Mesa ES, Sunnyside ES, and Needham ES.
Florida Mesa ES, Riverview ES, Escalante Middle School, and Durango High School roofing projects will be conducted the following summer(s).
Asphalt/Concrete
Construction Documents are in progress at facilities across the district:
- Animas Valley ES for asphalt trail and concrete repairs as needed.
- At Needham ES to improve parking lot and parent/student drop-off circulation patterns, including the removal of tennis courts to provide adequate space to improve vehicle circulation, student pedestrian safety, and appropriate emergency vehicle access.
- Riverview ES west playground asphalt maintenance.
- Sunnyside ES parking lot repairs.
- Escalante MS parking lot repairs.
Durango High School Improvements
Programming is in progress in parallel with the Career and Innovation Center for deferred maintenance throughout the school, including: HVAC upgrades, resolving accessibility issues, doors/lockers, and interior finish repairs.
Needham ES Improvements
Schematic Designs are complete and under review for a variety of improvements to select HVAC upgrades, doors/windows, interior finish repairs, and select flooring upgrades.
An RFP has been issued for CM/GC services.
Park ES Improvements
Design Development has been completed and is under review for numerous projects including: select HVAC upgrades, exterior and interior finish repair, select flooring, kitchen improvements, and exterior door and window improvements.
An RFP has been issued for CM/GC services for these projects.
Sunnyside ES Improvements
Schematic Designs are complete and under review for a variety of improvements to select HVAC and electrical upgrades, door and window improvements, and interior finish repairs.
An RFP has been issued for CM/GC services for these projects.
Transportation
New buses have been ordered, including an electric bus to begin service this month.
Technology
Fiber installation to rural schools is mostly completed and progress continues to connect the last schools. Additional Chromebooks have been purchased.
Charter Schools Allocation
All contracts are in place with each Charter School and schools have been withdrawing from their portion of funds. Juniper has withdrawn 63% of their allocated funds, Mountain MS has withdrawn 33%, and Animas HS has withdrawn 79% of funds.
The construction project estimates have been impacted by the rising material costs that are being seen and felt across the country. Construction costs have increased an average of 24% since 2020 due to supply shortages, manufacturer product delays, shipping and delivery delays for our recent projects. The MEP consultant on the renovations projects is seeing a 25% Q4 increase that is being factored into the design phase estimates.
In addition to cost increases, the district is seeing 4-5 month lead times for roofing materials, door hardware, select HVAC equipment, and other miscellaneous materials that will impact the completion timeline of many, if not all, projects.
